On Stage Off the Wall
A November to Remember
By Larry Biddison

If the song has it right, now is the time for those autumn leaves of red and gold to drift by the window. But mine fell several weeks ago while I was at the shore. Upon returning, I was surprised to find our backyard maples had become “bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.” And yet the surrounding hills were amazingly alive with color. What artist could ask for a prettier palette?

But “The days grow long/And soon I’ll hear/Old winter’s song.” November begs us to start looking inward, toward the hearth, if not toward the galleries, theaters, and concert halls. Here’s what I’m aware of that will be on and off the wall in November and early December:

Dickens of a Christmas
What: Wellsboro’s Twenty-fifth Annual Dickens of a Christmas Festival. Besides all the excitement indoors, things are going on in the streets. A full schedule of events appears elsewhere in Mountain Home, but don’t miss the Dickens Players performing Steve Bickham’s latest skit at 11 a.m. at the corner of Crafton and Main. During the day there’ll be open houses and teas throughout downtown, costumed strollers in period costumes, street musicians singing and playing seasonal songs, food vendors filling the crisp air with tempting aromas, and various peddlers, urchins, and snake-oil salesmen hawking their wares. The Dickens Players perform at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center at 12:30 p.m. The grand day winds down with the Wellsboro Men’s and Women’s Choruses singing under the Arcadia Theatre marquee from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by Evensong at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 4 p.m., and the candlelight parade and lighting of the town Christmas tree on the Green at 5 p.m. What a day!
