Mountain Home Guide You may know that GPS (global positioning system) gizmo on the dashboard of your friend’s car as the way he manages to not get lost when he isn’t close to home. But for millions of people worldwide, it is the center of the high-tech nature-oriented hide-and-seek game known as geocaching. An event in Potter County last year brought hundreds of treasure-hunters, and the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce is hoping to do the same with a geocaching contest in mid-May. “This event is for beginners,” says event organizer Charlie Messina, “requiring minimal effort.” Once you’ve navigated to your destination, you have a walk of “five, six feet from the vehicle.” The prizes are real, but the search is for virtual caches. So take a camera—or a picnic basket —because the hunt is laid out with a mind to vista and view, the real treasure at the heart of the hunt. WHAT: Wellsboro Area Geocaching Contest |
